The Banned Library Bookmobile was uncovered behind the dumpster at the rear of the building. The vehicle, a 1972 Volkswagon Super Beetle, was long since thought missing after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
The Banned Library purchased the Beetle from Dr. Martin Brown, physicist, in 1985. Dr. Brown had been using the vehicle as some type of greenhouse to breed pine trees in various temporal experiments. After the library acquired the automobile, it was used weekly to visit various parts of the county to deliver books as well as to schools when giving class demonstrations.
"We loved that little car," Evan Banned, director, said, "After Katrina, we kind of forgot about it. A lot of things got thrown around and I guess we just figured someone found it in their yard and decided to keep it. It never gave us any problems and we look forward to utilizing it in the future."
The staff suspects that the high winds during Hurricane Katrina pushed the little car into the narrow area behind the dumpster and no one noticed. The library is now checking other areas around the library grounds for other items that may have escaped the communities attention. So far, only a small palm tree and the remanents of a meth lab have been found near the HVAC system.
