"MY NAME IS CRAIG AND I'M A SIMPLETON! THIS IS TRASH AT THE LIBRARY!"
I signed and walked to the nearest window overlooking the front lawn. Craig and the little cameraman were standing on the front lawn of the library. Craig was throwing six large bright orange garbage bags from the back of a pickup truck while cameraman filmed it.
"Mom," I yelled, "Call the police."
I ran out the front door just in time to see Craig jump headfirst off the pickup and into the pile of garbage. He began thrashing around tearing the bags open, a one man mosh pit. Cameraman stood with his back to me, cheering Craig on. Neither of them seemed to notice me walk up.
I grabbed Cameraman by the back of the neck and once again took the device from him. He protested for a moment, but I applied more pressure and shook him like a dog. Craig continued to spread old soda cans and other debris around the front lawn.
"What the hell do you think you are doing?" I heard Mom yell from behind me.
Craig jumped to his feet and ran for the truck. He did not look back to see if Cameraman was following.
Adam moved much faster than I would have thought. He tackled Craig, bringing the bigger boy down to the grass. The two began to wrestle, fists striking out. If we had taken bets before hand, my money would have been on Craig out of sheer size, but Adam held his own and even seemed to be dominating Craig with speed rather than strength. Still, I felt the need to stop this.
I handed off Cameraman and the camera to Mom, her fingers gripping the boy's arm and digging in. Bern walked up behind them and began berating Cameraman, either not seeing her boyfriend and Craig fighting in the grass or not caring.
"Daniel, what the hell are you two doing here? What's the matter with you?"
Daniel the Cameraman mumbled something in response but I was already walking away by that point.
As I walked up, Craig gained better footing and threw Adam to the ground. The smaller boy moved to roll out of the way, but caught two fists in the face. Stunned, Adam did not seem to notice Craig climb on top of him to continue the assault.
I grabbed Craig from behind and hauled him into the air. My back strained and I reminded myself that I was not as young as I used to be. Craig tried to fight me, but I caught his arm and pinned it behind his back.
"Ow, man, ow, let go of me."
"Not til the cops get here," I said, forcing his knees to bend and lowered him to the grass.
"Fuck you," he said, "You can't do this. I'm a minor."
"You just trashed government property, again, and if you move I'll break your arm."
He must have heard more conviction in my voice than there actually was because he stopped resisting. Beyond a few bar fights and hauling drunks out of the clubs, I had never hurt anyone on purpose. Thankfully, he did not seem to know that.
A police car pulled up and an officer and Parker got out. I groaned.
"So, Banned, picking on kids now, huh?" Parker said.
I let go of Craig and he was handcuffed along with Daniel. Then Parker moved to Adam.
"Looks like this one has been fighting, too. Take him."
"He's with us," I said, "He's doing his community service here. He didn't cause anything."
"He's been fighting just the same," Parker said with a smile, "He can sort that out with his parents and Judge Oldman."
The officer also handcuffed Adam and lead him to the cruiser. The three boys were stuffed in the backseat. Adam looked defeated. I know how he felt.
"Mr. Banned, you can't let them take him," Bern said, but Mom put a hand on her shoulder.
"Bernadette," Mom said, "Why don't you go home? I'm sure this will all be sorted out."
Bern sniffed and walked back into the library.
"I'll be back to take your statement in a minute after we process these three," Parker said, climbing into the cruiser.
Mom and I watched the car drive away.
"Little shit," Mom said.
I nodded, even though I was not sure if she was talking about Craig or Parker.
"Come on, Evan. Let's get this cleaned up."
I looked at the trash scattered around the lawn. There goes my good Monday, I thought.
