Giles is casting a Protectega and there’s a little girl with a teddy bear and red tentacles coming out of her mouth. Page 1.
Giles and a nurse go running into a bathroom while the tentacle girl breaks in and beats the crap outta them. Giles gets cut, but casts a white light spell that makes the tentacles go away. Then he leaves.
Cut to Angel and Faith fighting another little girl with tentacle mouth disease. They are hacking away at the tentacles when Angel gets hungry and bites the little girl. The tentacle thing gets out of the little girl, some blood gets on Angel and he has flashbacks while Faith kills the thing.
The two leave and talk a bit.
Cut to a girl walking alone by herself when she’s attacked. The attacker is Faith and the girl is a slayer. They go to a party and talk a lot. There’s some flash backs of wonder twins killing people.
Then a guy in a hat is talking to the Wonder Twins, who have killed people.
Angel and Faith chit chat. He says something that makes her stare at him. Fin.
What’s on the cover?
Angel and Faith looking all vampire killy in a graveyard. Faith is stomping a demon under a gravestone and angel is holding a broadsword in one hand and a cross in the other while his cross hand is smoking. Also, there’s a gravestone with Giles’s name on it.
How’s the pictures?
The art in this issue is dynamic and fun, but only in the parts where the color gets to shine. When left to just the lines and pencils (especially in the night portions where color is washed out) it gets fairly boring and focused on a lot of high and low angles with little imagination. The character models are spot-on though, close enough that even people with passing knowledge of the show should pick up on who’s who.
What really happened?
So, Giles is dead. Angel killed him while possessed by Twilight. Cough. Season 8. Cough.
The first part of the story is Giles using his memory of Jenny Calendar (someone Angel killed also) and him falling in love to bind a demon in a little girl. After his death, the demon was freed and Angel and Faith are there to kill it.
Angel goes off and Faith finds another slayer who tells her about Twilight and some vampire twins with uberpowers who massacred a bunch of slayerettes.
Turns out Whistler (Angel’s old mentor) is signing up the twins for some carnage.
Faith confronts Angel about working with the bad guys, he says he did, and then says he’s gonna bring back Giles from the dead. Duh, duh, dummmmmm.
Did I like it?
It does what it does, but honestly this storyline is mired in backstory and confusion. I watched the TV show religiously and read Season 8 of the Buffy comics and don’t know what the hell is happening. I think both these characters work best when acting in a supporting role, and focusing the camera on them here makes Faith come off flighty and Angel just boring as hell. The missing element here is the ensemble. The two of them are simply not enough to keep me interested, especially when I have to go to wikipedia every five minutes to find out what the hell happened to who.
