After what seems to be a very hardcore patron reference interview, a Montrose librarian was fired and is now suing the library system. Due to the litigation involved, we will speak cautiously about the situation, but this just seems like a huge, big old clusterfuck, as Grandma Banned would have said.
From what I could gather, shit hit the fan over a DVD. A patron would not leave, so the librarian called the cops. After that, it becomes a murky "who yelled at whom, who restrained whom, who went batshit more" pond of despair and hell.
As a former person who would let stuff go to far, I say this is bad all around for the library staff. Yeah, look, we put on the policeman hats and protect our patrons from one another all the time. But when you call the cops and then go farther than that, you are asking for trouble. I am not saying the librarian should have been fired, I was not there, but something went dreadfully wrong for this to have made the paper. That kind of attention just makes everybody look bad, no matter who was right or wrong.
