The library can be called many things. "The place where the books live." "Heart of the community." "Stinky place where they let the homeless people live." "Porn dungeon." "Community center."
I like to call the library something different, "reflection of the community."
Good, bad, and everything in between. However seen, it is still a place where everyone is welcome, able to be who they are and get the information and entertainment entitled to them. When the community suffers, the library suffers. Whent he community benefits, the library benefits. And when the community abandons itself, stops connecting either from financial woes or just a moving technological world, the library is abandoned.
Does this mean that the community is beyond the brick and mortar centers of town? Does this mean that the money is going to schools and other community centers of education and scholarship? Wifi centers for public access maybe? I hope it goes somewhere where everyone can benefit if they choose.
The Maywood Library closed after 140 years of service due to financial issues and will not reopen until those concerns are addressed. Unfortunate because it is not alone, adding to other libraries around the nation falling to financial unconcern. May they become more and their communities benefit for their loss.
