The massive multi-headed hydra that is the Smithosonian has begat yet another baby: an online 3D scanning initiative aimed at bringing famous objects out of the crates and packing foam and into classrooms. Items such as the Wright Brothers plane and Amelia Earheart's flight suit have been digially scanned as 3D models for an online viewer that will debut November 13th. Those that access the 3D models will also be able to use 3D printers to copy the objects, bringing acutal items from the Smithsonian into homes and classrooms.
This is all well and good, but I saw The Fly. Jeff Goldblum did not do so well in that movie and Gena Davis gave birth to a maggot and it was gross. What if that happens again? What if while they are scanning a bust of Abraham Lincoln a fly lands on the it and then forever after it looks like Abraham Lincoln had a fly on his face? Is that how you want to remember Lincoln? IS IT? I thought not.
