Graff meets with General Pace and they talk about not killing Ender so much. Graff says he is training a war hero, Pace thinks Graff is gonna blow up the school with infighting, especially since other boys in the school are plotting to kill Ender. Graff says “Don’t worry about it.”
Back at Battle School, Ender is pretty sure that folks wanna kill him. The behavior of several of the other boys confirms that they want him alone and vulnerable, and they do not want to give him cookies.
The day comes when Ender is caught alone by Bonzo and a group of other boys. Ender plays on Bonzo’s sense of honor and gets the older boy to fight one on one, in which Ender brutally beats the shit outta the kid. Like, “makes him stop” kinda beating.
Ender leaves and freaks out a bit, then finds out he has to go into battle, but this time against two armies. Ender wins the battle by not fighting but by activating the victory switch (which is normally done after all enemy combatants are down). Anderson comes in and calls Ender on the tactic, but Ender says he is done with the games.
Ender’s army is then disbanded and Ender is given orders to report to Big Boy Command. He says goodbye to Bean and he and Graff fly down to Earth.
Two shadow men are talking about military matters and Ender. We learn Graff has been also transferred from Battle School. We also learn that Ender killed Bonzo as well as the kid at the beginning.
It is at this point where I start to believe this is simply what Batman was doing when he went off on his own after his parents died, except, you know, he keeps killing people with his bare hands. Ender is clearly still a little kid, but the authority figures seem to be grooming him to be a sociopath that can and will just rage on anyone that threatens him. What we have not really seen from Ender is restraint. He beats on Bonzo and the passages tell us that he continues to do so so the other child will fear him, will never come after him again.
Anybody remember that old video game Killer Instinct? I thought that shit was a badass name. Turns out it is what happens when you get a real smart kid that does not, and I mean does effing not like no-win scenarios. Ender tore the kid apart and stuffed him in a body bag, Cobra Kai style.
- Was this the trigger the army was looking for? Think back on a time you were held in a Battle School regulated by the army and had to defend your life. Did you handle the situation differently?
- Did anybody else picture Bonzo as that guy from Boondock Saints 2 or the bad guy from Stargate?
- Does anybody remember that old video game Killer Instinct? Who was your favorite character? Remember when Orchid would show her boobs for a finishing move?
- How about Primal Rage?
