What can I say about Justified that has not been said? I love this series. I love the characters, the dialog, the plots (most of them), and the way Elmore Leonard’s world has been replicated down to the tiny degree. Finally catching up with this last season, Season 4, I can say the trend is continuing and unless they go crazy they could have a damn solid show on their hands when they finally close the doors in Harlan County.
So what is Raylan and the hillbillies in Harlan facing this go around? How about a D. B. Cooper style “man fell out of the sky” mystery that somehow involves Raylan’s father? How about Raylan becoming a daddy? How about more intervention from the Dixie Mafia and the heroin interests, including the Crowder gang? And how about we also mix all that up in a stew of gun play that ends up with, you guessed it, everybody dead.
So here’s the place where I normally tell you what I liked about this show, but I did most of that in the first paragraph. And every time I rant about this show. I will not bore you too much, except to point out two stand out guest stars in this season: Patton Oswalt and Jim Beavers. You know Mr. Oswalt as a comedian and Mr. Beavers from his roles on Supernatural and Deadwood. Just watch this season for the two of them if for no other reason.
What did I not like about this season? It plotted a little slow and, to be honest, the main plots were kinda weak. This has always been a character based show, and the characters shine here, but I do not think they were given much to do. Most of the time in the main story about the missing man I forgot what they were looking for and why because it became so convoluted and nonessential most of the time. Two side plots of Raylan’s girlfriend and a new soldier friend of Boyd’s started interesting but ended with whimpers while the plot with Ella Mae and the preachers seemed to get a misdirected light that took the breath out of their stories. Overall good, but missing the mark with the pointedness of the stories.
Should you watch this season? Well, if you watched the other three I can not think of a reason you haven’t already. If you have never seen the show and liked the Wire and the Shield, I say give it a shot. Crime ficiton at its best with life breathed into it by the modern master of the genre, Elmore Leonard.
