The neighborhood calls him Cat. His real name is lost, slipped through a crack he'd rather not remember. If he ever did anything besides be vagrant, the police might check him out and find his real life. But he's nice and kind and never bothers anybody.
We don't know where he goes at night. A librarian a long time ago tried but found nothing. No shelter knew him. No church knew him. He would not accept rides home. Just a man who walked in the library day after day and read the paper before starting in on whatever novel we held behind the circulation desk for him. He read the books fast enough that nobody noticed.
Fun fact about why the neighborhood calls him Cat. Years ago, the library had a few animals that we fed off the loading dock. No matter how much food we put out, the felines would devour it. More and more, the staff put out the food and it vanished. One librarian, less tact than humanity, said it was that guy, that Cat guy that roamed around, he was eating up all the other cat's food. Name stuck, even after animal control took away all the racoons.
Cat came in wet when it rained. He came in sweaty in the July sun. He came in cold and smelly and ragged and tired. But he always came in. Now Cat is coming in one last time on the last day at the library and no one knows where he will go tomorrow, not even Cat.
Welcome to the Banned Library, all those coming from the A to Z Challenge! For those of you not familiar or who just don't want to click that link, the A to Z Challenge is a blogging competition between blogger and self to post one entry a day during April based on the letter of the alphabet. Starting April 1st and continuing throughout the month (skipping Sundays), one entry a day will be devoted to this challenge. As the Banned Library often posts several entries a day, we have decided to turn this over to our fiction department. Our challenge will be a series called "Last Day at the Library," chronicling the things and people that will end when a library closes. We hope you enjoy it and be sure to check out the many, many other blogs associated with the A to Z Challenge.
