Sometimes I don't even have to work hard to find something to talk about. Libraries infested by bugs, people dump the weirdest things into book drops, and Southern Baptists get together in their conventions and challenge fictional depictions of heaven.
I'm not here to tell you your religion is right or wrong. I studied English and library science so come to me when you need to write about and catalog an afterlife. Not my job, search your own heart and find something to believe in. Pray to Batman or Cthulhu for all I care, just don't hurt people.
That being said, saying your pretend place is not like my pretend place is damn funny and juvenile. The SBC's main argument is that the way heaven is described in the books and films like Heaven is for Real "cannot be corroborated." As if this was a science experiment where a bunch of Baptists in lab coats are standing around a chalkboard and Southern Baptist House says, "You know, this movie's heaven looks like lupus."
"But it's never lupus, Baptist House!" the others yell and then they find the real Heaven in the first place they looked.
Does this really happen outside of nerd message boards? Don't we have more important things to discuss in this new digital media age other than if someone's afterlife is in conjunction with an ancient man's afterlife?
I imagine this has happened before. Ug and Glug were back in the cave throwing spears and having sex and talking because language. Ug thinks heaven is fighting without dying. Glug thinks heaven is a giant Sarlacc pit where you are devoured by orgasms.Ug kills Glug with a rock because "what's a Sarlacc" and she goes off to find a better mate. End of discussion.
Fast forward a dozen or so years and similar arguments have arisen. What's the origin of the Joker? Which Quicksilver is the real one, the one in X-Men: Day's of Ultron's Past or Avengers: Age of Future Time Men? And where the fuck is the beef?
It's kinda silly really that a bunch of grown people (i.e. white dudes) got together in a room and voted (yeah they did) and made it clear that from their perspective other person's idea of the afterlife is horseshit. Because that's what is all about, right? Making sure you are right and unbelievers know it.
