Newsletter: Welcome Seamen!

Once again, Fleet Week is at the library! Get ready to get your nautical on as we have events and programs ready to test your knowledge and excitement about guys that live on boats.

Most of our events this week are geared toward helping you understand what life is like on a ship for long stretches of time. We're having a YMCA dance party, cooking navy beans for all that good protein, and mixology with actual sailors! Speaking of actual sailors, we have "Dancing" Robert Gouchet and Andy Turner from the shrimp boat "Taco's Revenge" to answer all your questions Wednesday evening.

Continuing into the weekend, we are having a remote control air and watercraft show. Look out, Top Gun, the skies and bayous around the library will be full of high flying naval action.

Let's get navy on shore leave!

  • One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot (2021) by Marianne Cronin - a beautiful little story built on reflection and loss. You will cry.

  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (DC Comics, 2022) - Fuck yeah, this gorgeous art deco take on True Grit deserves to be held in your hand.

  • King Sorrow (2025) by Joe Hill - A too-long yet engaging tale of friendship and fighting dragons.

Tech Serv's Stewpot

Could be a recipe or a random rant from a crazy person shoved in the back of the library and left alone too long! Probably both.

Back in my day I had me some sailors on fleet week. Met them in a bar down by the docks. Place called the Yellow Fin. Used to invite those boys back to my place for a game of adrenaline rush. That's when you put a knife to your sensitive parts and take shots until someone falls over.

Anyway, the best way to cook beans is in a pot over heat until they are ready.
