movie poster for The Odyssey (2026)

We talk The Odyssey and it's a Buck Moon

The library decorated the teen department in the style of the Old Ones so if you see faceless children in the manga section remember to whisper their name while backing away.

The library is a perfect place to get out of the summer heat as long as there's less than thirty people in the library. After that the air con gets a little funky.

The July Buck Moon celebration will start at sundown and end when all the chex mix is devoured.

The Odyssey (2026) - written and directed by Christopher Nolan, starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, and Anne Hathaway

Boat trip! Follow Odysseus and his crew of fuckwits as they wander around the Mediterranean for a bit meeting interesting people and dying in gruesome ways while back home a bunch of guys are eating Odysseus's food, trying to marry his wife, and plotting to kill his kid. This movie has everything including ear splitting rumbling sounds that will make you wonder "what did he say?"

Nolan plays fast and loose with time once again, his defining feature. We get the story told out of order by some guy with a stick, by Odysseus himself, by Odyssey's war buddy, some other alive guys, and by some dead guys, all out of order. It's one of those theme movies where the telling is more important than whether or not you like any of the characters. And why not? Nobody seems to like themselves until the end when the "heroes" decide to murder everyone. Then they sail off happy as pigs in a bucket of mud.

More horror is here than I thought. The only part of the original tale I remembered was the cyclops telling his friends "Nobody" was fucking with him, and they left that out, but they did have the cyclops eat a guy like a slice of watermelon. Then the sailors go to the island where Circe lives and she molds them into pigs like Clayface using techniques I've only seen in a New Orleans back alley for some beads.

Couple of things:

1. "Hero" comes from the word meaning to protect and safeguard. They were guys and gals that did extraordinary things, not always nice or good or kind things. Lot of heroes on one side of a war were pieces of shit on the other.

2. You can't spoil a 2,700 year old story, even the adaptation that takes liberties. Fuck off.

3. I never thought about how the Trojan Horse and the suitors in Odysseus's house were the same kinda evil. Goes back to that hero thing, I guess.

4. Would you rather: Sail off into the sunset with Anne Hathaway after murdering Robert Pattinson or chill on an island with Charlieze Theron getting stoned but only eat fish?

Damn fine time at the movies and worthy of the long ass run time. Check it out.
