Newsletter: The Other and Other Things
Fall is approaching! Children are getting back in their forced labor camps, the squirrels are digging up the yard, and the leaves are waiting to fall off the trees, turn brown, and decay into the soil. It is a time for the end of thriving life and the slow decline into the heartbreak of frozen grief. May August end and September birth a new, colder hell.
The only constant is change. I believe Abraham Lincoln or Leonardo Da Vinci said that. Somebody who understood that the life they lead will some day become obsolete as the generations before them had. The truly great among us ride that change, embrace it, and strive to use that change to better the world for everyone. How we accept change shows up in how we accept ourselves and others. Be kind as you go forward. Remind yourself and those you love that you love them and that everyone is doing their best. And if someone is hurting someone else, remind them with a soft word and if they still keep doing it, a heavy lead pipe.

Children's Corner - What's happening in the children's department this week!
Student Workers - For anyone age 5-13, the library is looking for little hands to do some sensitive work for us. The bookmobile has small spaces library staff cannot reach! We also require some coding work in C#, Java, JavaScript, and Python. Ask at the children's desk. Parental permission required.
Free shots! - Come down Wednesday afternoon to get vaccinations for COVID, flu, PPV, HPV, yellow fever, and more. For those 21 and older, we'll also be offering free Jagermeister, Fireball, Lemondrops, pickle backs, and straight tequila and whiskey. Wednesday, September 2, 3pm-6pm, Story Time Room
Story Time on Fire - Story time this week will simulate the wildfires covering much of the world. As we read themed books, we will do so outside if the weather permits or near an open window to breathe in all that good smoke.

How to Play Darts - It has come to the library staff's attention* that some members of our community have lost the time honored tradition of throwing small sharp projectiles in a room full of adults wherein everyone has consumed alcohol. Come down to the library basement speakeasy** every night this week*** after closing to learn the game of darts. Weekdays except Tuesday, The Yellow Door**
CPR for Regular People - Have you ever had someone fall out on you while you were trying to check out books at the local library? Heart attack, stroke, spontaneous cranial explosion, no matter the cause if you want to help others stay alive come down to the library this Thursday to learn just the simple basics of CPR with none of that fancy woo-woo magic everyone else attempts. The Dentist and You - Nobody wants to go to the dentist except those weirdo moon people, but you have to because you're not a garbage moon person. Twice this week, Dr. Alzaya Martin, DDS will give a little show and tell at the library to help everyone see how awful the moon people are and correct dental hygiene. Circulation Station - What we've been reading/watching
Spider-Man: The Other - Collected across twelve issues of three ongoing titles, this is a full on miss. While the beginning of the end was the whole "Green Goblin impregnated Gwen Stacy" and the final death nail was "Spider-Man deals with the devil," hot stinkers like The Other plopped along trying to tie up Straczynski's totem story line that had promise. They tried really hard here, but oof it's no wonder I remember very little of the resolution this storyline started. Doesn't help Civil War began right after.
52 Pickup by Elmore Leonard - Whoo boy. I've been reading through Leonard's work because I believe the man was a master craftsman at writing. It's hard reading these early works and seeing the humor and easy "marijuana drawl" his style would develop into while also accepting at times he could be an edgelord. While I can't recommend reading this one, his later works are crime fiction classics.
Cape Fear (1991) - I have a theory that creative masters should not be able to remake the things they love exactly. Martin Scorsese loved gangster and noir films of his youth, so when making original productions like Mean Streets and Goodfellas infused those with the love he had. While this is a great fun movie, complete with the menace and then some of the original 196…film, it feels like a comical copy. Add in a laugh track, and it's no wonder The Simpsons used this as the basis of Sideshow Bob. Check it out, but be warned it's a dark farce with some very uncomfortable scenes.

Tech Serv's Stewpot - Could be a recipe or a random rant from a crazy person shoved in the back of the library and left alone too long!
Violence and anger have no part in the kitchen. Too many knives and too many places to stick them while riled up and a man just standing there acting like he didn't eat all the Oreos. Saying he didn't while his teeth are filled with that beautiful black dust and his tongue sweet with the cream of illicit sugar. Not just the knives but the meat tenderizer that could cause the hard bits of the body become sand with a heavy swing and a cold heart with vengeance on the mind.
If you want to make your own sandwich cookies, just make up a batch of regular sugar cookies. Melt some butter and mix it with sugar. Take some flour and baking powder and get that well together. Then crack an egg and some vanilla stuff, not too much, and get all that together. Plop them in balls on a baking sheet and bake them for a while. While those are going, warm up some frosting in the microwave for a bit, like 10 seconds, or you could mix powdered sugar and a bunch of other shit. I never bothered cause they make frosting in a can now. I guess they make Oreos, too, but let's not talk about oreos. When the cookies come out, let them cool and then make sandwiches. You can eat them without milk, but the gods might shit on your car if you do.
